Taxation
Clear guidance through Pakistan's evolving tax landscape.
Overview
Worried about your tax affairs? Over the years the Federal Board of Revenue has continuously broadened the tax net to increase revenue, and compliance has grown more demanding. We advise individuals and businesses on tax planning, filings, and disputes with tax authorities.
Common questions
What happens if I miss the income tax filing deadline in Pakistan?
Late filing typically triggers a penalty and can affect your status on the Active Taxpayers List, which in turn increases the withholding tax rate you pay on various transactions. It's worth filing even if late, rather than not filing at all.
Do overseas Pakistanis need to file a tax return?
It depends on residency status and the source of income. Non-resident Pakistanis are generally only taxed on Pakistan-source income, but the rules around what counts as Pakistan-source income, and when filing is required, are specific enough to be worth confirming individually.
Can I appeal an FBR tax assessment I disagree with?
Yes. An assessment can be challenged before the Commissioner (Appeals) and, if necessary, the Appellate Tribunal Inland Revenue — but appeals have strict filing deadlines, so timing matters as much as the substance of the appeal.
